The collaboration between System 1 and 2 is based on efficiency. System 1 is in control and operates on autopilot. System 2 waits patiently. As long as no help is requested from System 2, System 1 continues to handle all possible information as efficiently as possible.
In many activities, we end up using both systems. System 1 takes on the bulk of the work and engages System 2 as needed. For example, consider how a practiced driver moves effortlessly through traffic (System 1), but has to think about the route to a new destination (System 2). Or how I sense that this sentence could be written better (System 1), but I need to analyze how to do this (System 2).
(Okay maybe my System 2 also lacks some quality because the sentence still doesn't flow optimally. If you can help, please send an email at mysystem2isbetterthanyoursystem2@solfem.nl)
All the time, System 2 receives suggestions from System 1 in the form of impressions, intuitions, intentions and feelings. When System 2 accepts these, they become beliefs and voluntary actions. Usually this happens without any modifications. With this, System 1 has great influence over System 2's analytical view.
